To the North of Shangri La, the Napa Hai is a lake area which in the summer is pasture for yaks and in the winter is a home for various migratory birds. Shangri La itself is on the Tibetan plateau and is a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside. The old town, Dukezong, was badly damaged by fire in 2014, resulting in the loss of many traditional wooden houses and buildings. It is in the process of being rebuilt by the government.
